If you are starting a new language, no placement exam is needed, simply register for the introductory-level course.
Students with prior experience or background in a language who wish to begin coursework above the introductory level are required to take a placement exam to ensure appropriate course placement.
While the Excel Languages Center collaborates closely with the Department of Languages and Cultures, we are separate entities. All language placement exams and proficiency assessments are overseen by the Department of Languages and Cultures. For inquiries regarding placement or assessments, please contact them at langcult@uccs.edu.

Students may need to satisfy a world language requirement as part of their degree program, which is typically outlined in their degree audit. For questions about this requirement, students are encouraged to contact their academic advisor.
Students who are already proficient in a language other than English may be eligible for a proficiency assessment to fulfill the MAPS or HEAR world language requirement. Those seeking placement or wishing to demonstrate proficiency should contact the Department of Languages and Cultures at langcult@uccs.edu
The Department of Languages and Cultures now oversees the language placement process, which was previously managed by the Excel Languages Center.
To schedule a placement or proficiency assessment, please contact the Department of Languages and Cultures at langcult@uccs.edu. Please note that these assessments do not grant academic credit; instead, students receive a language proficiency document indicating their proficiency level based on their results. After completing the placement exam, both you and your Academic Advisor will be notified of the recommended course level.
While the Excel Languages Center no longer administers placement or proficiency testing, our tutors are available to help you prepare for these assessments and provide ongoing language support once you are enrolled in courses.
If a faculty member assigned a language proficiency assessment or WebCAPE test for a class requirement, contact the Languages and Cultures Department at langcult@uccs.edu.
The Languages Center no longer administers English proficiency assessments for international student admissions. Those that have questions about English proficiency assessments are encouraged to contact their admissions counselor. Please contact us at LangsCtr@uccs.edu if you need support finding campus resources.
