About Us

More Information

The Excel Languages Center (LC) is one of five Excel Centers in the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. We are housed in the division of Academic Affairs. We are located in Dwire Hall 270 and available to all UCCS students, faculty, staff, and community members.

Our center is open to all students and community members. While we provide intentional support to students enrolled in language courses, ELC visitors do not need to be enrolled in a language course to utilize our services. This means that you can also bring a friend along to join you in practicing and further developing your target language.

The Excel Languages Center is a hub for UCCS's language learning community. On any given day, you might stumble across a Japanese conversation table discussing favorite foods, students conversing in Spanish, or even a lively game of mahjong, all while foreign films are playing in the background. Our center is perfect for tutoring, playing games, meetings, project planning sessions, study groups, and more. The LC always has free coffee, and we are known for our cultural events featuring authentic cultural cuisine and snacks.

The mission of the Excel Languages Center (LC) is to empower student success through collaborative learning, individualized tutoring, leadership development, and meaningful dialogues.

We offer in-person and online academic support, including individual and group world language tutoring, and conversation table sessions. Please call or email to consult with an ELC staff member or the Director (Jesse Perez) to discuss the most effective and convenient means of interaction for you.

Assist students with academic strategies, study skills, language learning, conversational skills, and general language skill mastery. Our staff provides tutoring, mentoring and language resources for students while working with students to develop specific techniques related to learning their target language.

Tutoring is available one-on-one or in small groups. Tutors can provide general support in addition to specific support with assignments and skills designated by the student’s instructors or on skills and tasks identified by the student.

Our team of skilled tutors is here to make your language learning adventure a smooth and exciting one. Engaging with our tutors provides benefits beyond what you might expect:

Confidence Booster: Learning a language comes with its challenges. We're here to guide you through those tough spots, build your confidence, and turn mistakes into stepping-stones.

Speed Up Learning: Our tutors are experienced student leaders. They've walked the path you're on and can help you navigate it more efficiently.

Personalized Support: Whether you're just starting out or aiming to refine your skills, our tutors tailor their guidance to meet your individual needs and goals.

Building Collaborative Connections: Learning languages in a community setting encourages collaborative learning experiences, allowing individuals to exchange insights, practice conversations, and collectively explore linguistic nuances, creating a dynamic environment that accelerates language acquisition and mutual support.

Remember, language learning is a journey. It's okay to stumble, fumble, and get tangled in words – that's all part of the process. Our tutors understand this and will meet you where you are at.

The Excel Languages Center is located in Dwire Hall, Room 270. Check the ELC website for updated hours and methods of accessing our services.

The ELC works collaboratively with Staff and Faculty to enhance students’ academic experiences by providing them with opportunities to apply what they learn in class and further practice and develop their target language skills with a skilled Tutor. We are available to work with you to develop a support program that's right for you and your students. Contact the ELC Director (Jesse Perez) to discuss how the ELC can help you meet your needs.

The Excel Languages Center is your dedicated hub for language support and growth. We hope that you will consider us to be a partner on your journey of language acquisition. Currently, we offer tutoring and conversation tables for American Sign Language (ASL), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. We understand that your curiosity might extend beyond our current tutoring offerings. We wholeheartedly welcome students interested in languages we don't currently offer tutoring for. Our center is a place for exploration, where you can access an array of resources, including films and books, to enhance your self-study experience. Your interest and enthusiasm are the driving force behind our future expansion. We encourage you to voice your needs to us as this helps us shape our future offerings. By expressing your desire for support with a specific language, you contribute to building a case for bringing on new tutors as demand grows.

If you have questions, please contact the ELC Director (Jesse Perez) to discuss how the ELC can best support you.
