Tutoring and time that works for me

Tutoring at the Excel Languages Center

The Excel Languages Center (LC) offers free tutoring to support students in their language learning journey. Whether you're enrolled in a UCCS language course or are an independent learner, our peer tutors are here to help you build confidence, improve proficiency, and develop effective language-learning strategies.

Our mission is to help students succeed in language learning through personalized tutoring, conversational practice, and skill-building strategies. We provide a welcoming and inclusive space where students can strengthen their language abilities and gain cultural insights.

What We Offer:

  • Individual and group tutoring: Receive one-on-one or small-group support tailored to your needs, whether you need help with grammar, pronunciation, listening comprehension, or writing.
  • Conversation tables: Practice speaking in an informal setting with other learners and tutors to build fluency and confidence.
  • Language learning strategies: Get guidance on effective study techniques, vocabulary retention, and best practices for language acquisition.
  • Cultural and linguistic insights: Gain a deeper understanding of cultural nuances and real-world language use beyond the classroom.
  • Academic support: Tutors work closely with faculty to ensure that tutoring aligns with course objectives and student learning goals.

Who Are Our Tutors?

Our tutors are UCCS students who have excelled in their language studies and are trained to support their peers. They understand the challenges of language learning firsthand and are committed to fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment.

Benefits of Tutoring

Working with a tutor provides numerous advantages, including:

  • Increased confidence: Overcome language barriers and gain the skills to communicate effectively.
  • Accelerated learning: Learn strategies to improve retention and apply your language skills more efficiently.
  • Personalized support: Get targeted help based on your unique learning style and goals.
  • Community and collaboration: Join a supportive environment where you can engage with fellow language learners.

Tutoring begins the first week of classes each semester and ends the last week of classes. (There is limited tutoring during finals week.)

If your personal schedule prevents you from attending one of our open sessions, you may contact us to inquire about setting up a one-on-one tutoring session. This is addressed on a case-by-case basis due to Tutor and administrative availability. Whenever possible, these sessions will also take place in the LC but we will continue to utilize Microsoft Teams in certain circumstances.

Please never hesitate to communicate your individual Excel Languages Center needs to us. If you need support outside of the posted days/hours, please email LANGSCTR@uccs.edu with a detailed request with your availability and the Excel Languages Center Director—Dr. Jesse Perez --will work with you to support your needs to the best of our ability.

Online Tutoring with Microsoft Teams

In addition to in-center drop-in tutoring and conversation tables, here are our online options:

  • Email us at langsctr@uccs.edu to request a live Microsoft Teams online appointment with a tutor.
  • Use our discussion board on Microsoft Teams to post questions, share short writing samples, or get feedback outside of regular tutoring hours.

How to Join the Languages Center Microsoft Teams

Step 1: Download or Open Teams

  • Download Microsoft Teams (desktop or mobile), or
  • Use the web version of Teams.

Step 2: Join the Languages Center Team

  • Click the Join Link: Join Link
  • Or, in Teams, go to Teams → Join or create a team → Join with a code, and enter the join code: 3jcdcfv

Step 3: Choose Your Language Channel

Once inside the UCCS Excel Languages Center (LC) – Public Team, you’ll see channels listed on the left side. These include:

  • General (announcements & LC-wide questions)
  • ASL Tutoring
  • French Tutoring
  • German Tutoring
  • Japanese Tutoring
  • Korean Tutoring
  • Spanish Tutoring

Click on the channel for your course language to connect with a tutor.

Step 4: Post Your Question

  • Write your question clearly (for example: “I’m working on SPAN 1020 and I’m not sure how to use this grammar structure”).
  • You can also upload a short paragraph, sentence, or voice recording for feedback.

Things to Know

  • Tutors support both in-person and online students. If they’re with another student when you post, they’ll respond as soon as they are free.
  • If your post comes in after a tutor’s shift ends, the next tutor on duty will follow up.
  • Start a new post for every question so nothing gets lost in long threads.
  • Your posts are visible to other students in the channel. This helps everyone learn from common questions and answers.
  • If you’d rather ask something privately, you can always email langsctr@uccs.edu or request a one-on-one appointment.
